My sculpture is a continuing conversation with the materials, tools and methods I use, with a heavy emphasis on metal work. I’m constantly trying new ways of building my visual vocabulary to attain the directness of drawing in three dimensions. If I reach the same part of a viewers psyche that allows us to enjoy instrumental music, I’ve reached my goal.
Derick Malkemus (b.1962 New Castle, Indiana) is a sculptor and metal fabricator, based in Chicago since receiving his MFA from SIUC Carbondale in 1990. He joined fellow Herron School of Art alumni at Vector Custom Fabricating, where he continues to be the lead artisan for the fabrication of prominent public artworks designed by commissioned artists. His own sculpture, in a range materials and scale, have been exhibited around the country and represented in both public and private collections.
