I started making art in earnest at about age twelve by painting faces, an expedient way to express human experience. Recently, I’ve been using found selfies of men from gay dating sites and social media as source material for my paintings. I often cut, collage, and combine my paintings to express and expand ideas about universally human themes.

Jeff Stevenson (b.1962, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a Chicago-based painter and mixed media artist. His work examines cultural constructs such as being a man, masculinity and femininity, and links it to our need for belonging. In our current moment of gender exploration, Stevenson’s art provides pathways to both highly personal and profoundly universal experiences.
